The 10-Day Tension Reset

What if you stopped trying to get rid of your tension—and started learning what keeps bringing it back?

Choose one recurring tension pattern and spend 10 days learning to recognize the hidden effort around it, respond differently, and give your body another option besides bracing harder.

If the tension keeps returning, the tension may not be the whole problem.

Most of us have learned to respond to tightness by trying to make the tight place change.

Stretch it.

Massage it.

Roll it.

Strengthen something.

Correct your posture.

Take a deep breath.

Tell yourself to relax.

And sometimes those things help.

But then something frustrating happens:

The tension comes back.

Sometimes that's because the thing that relieved the tension never changed the extra effort your body was repeatedly adding during everyday life.

Your body may be working harder than the moment requires.

Often without you consciously deciding to do it.

Your shoulders rise while you're answering emails.
Your jaw tightens when something feels important.
You hold your breath while concentrating.
Your abdomen braces while you're rushing.
Your entire body works harder during a simple movement.
Even when you stop, part of your body remains prepared.

Reset10 begins by helping you see the pattern—not just attack the tight place after it appears.

This is not about becoming better at relaxing.

That's an important distinction.

If every time you notice your shoulders tightening you immediately command them to relax, we've created another task:

Notice tension → fix tension.

Instead, I'm going to help you become curious about what is happening around the tension.

What were you doing?

How hard was your body working?

Did your breathing change?

Were you rushing?

Were you trying especially hard?

Did something in the moment feel more important than it actually needed to feel?

The objective isn't to analyze yourself.

It's to start seeing what was previously happening automatically.

Start with one tension pattern.

Not your whole body.

Not every symptom.

Not your entire history.

One recurring moment is enough.

Your jaw while working. Your shoulders while driving. Your abdomen when rushing. Your breath while exercising. Your back while sitting.

We'll use that one pattern as your laboratory for the next 10 days.

Three ways we'll work with tension.

Layer One

Release

Sometimes awareness isn't enough because the body is already highly guarded.

You'll explore simple physical strategies using movement, positioning, touch, or contraction that may help reduce some of the immediate effort.

We're not forcing anything out of your body.

We're creating a little more room.

Layer Two

Downshift

We'll change some of the conditions surrounding the tension.

Support. Position. Breath. Pace. Effort.

Rather than telling your body to relax, you'll begin asking:

“What happens when I don't have to work quite so hard right now?”

Layer Three

CALA

Catch.

Allow.

Listen.

Adjust.

This is where you begin recognizing the pattern without automatically treating every sensation as a problem that must immediately be fixed.

Over 10 days, you may begin noticing...

  • Tension before it becomes intense.
  • What tends to happen immediately before you tighten.
  • When your breathing becomes smaller.
  • Where unnecessary effort joins an activity.
  • When concentration becomes bracing.
  • When urgency changes the way your whole body organizes itself.
  • When you automatically try to fight a sensation.
  • Which strategies actually help.
  • When your body softens without being forced.
  • How quickly you return after tension builds.

Those are small observations—but they can completely change what you do next.

You won't need another hour in your day.

Reset10 isn't designed to become another demanding health routine.

You'll receive one short piece of guidance and one thing to explore.

Then your ordinary life becomes the practice.

  • Your computer.
  • Your walk.
  • Your workout.
  • Your drive.
  • Your kitchen.
  • Your conversations.
  • Your moments of rushing.
We're not adding more life to your practice. We're bringing the practice into the life you're already living.

You also don't have to do this perfectly.

Miss a day? Return.

Forget to notice? Return when you remember.

Your tension doesn't soften? That's information too.

Have a difficult day? That's part of the experience.

There is no prize for becoming the world's best tension monitor.

The goal is eventually to need less monitoring—not more.

This may be a good starting point if...

  • You don't realize you're tense until you're already very tight.
  • You regularly carry tension in your jaw, neck, shoulders, chest, ribs, back, abdomen, or hips.
  • You loosen your body, but the tension keeps returning.
  • You hold your breath when you're focused.
  • You feel as though your body is always “working.”
  • Exercise can leave you feeling tighter rather than freer.
  • You have difficulty letting go even when you're technically resting.
  • You suspect you're going through everyday life with the parking brake partly on.

What Reset10 is not.

This is not a promise that 10 days will eliminate chronic pain or tension.

It is not psychotherapy.

It is not a substitute for individualized healthcare.

And it isn't another collection of stretches or relaxation techniques.

Ten days gives us enough time to begin something much more specific:

Recognizing one pattern you couldn't clearly see before—and experimenting with another way to respond.

What you'll receive

  • 10 days of guided instruction that builds progressively.
  • The three-layer Reset approach: Release → Downshift → CALA.
  • Simple physical reset experiences for moments when awareness alone isn't enough.
  • One-pattern focus so your experience becomes personal rather than generic.
  • Everyday experiments you can use while working, moving, exercising, and living.
  • A starting check-in so you know where you're beginning.
  • A Day 10 reflection so you can identify what actually changed.

Why I created this

I'm James Ko, a physical therapist with nearly three decades of experience helping people with pain, movement, strength, and physical function.

For years, I looked at the things physical therapists are trained to look at:

Mobility. Strength. Posture. Movement. Exercise.

Those things still matter.

But another question became increasingly important to me:

Why is the body using so much effort in the first place?

Because I kept seeing people who could loosen something temporarily only to tighten again.

The more attention I paid to ordinary movement and ordinary life, the more interested I became in the effort people were adding without realizing it.

Sometimes we don't need another thing to do to the body.

Sometimes we need to recognize what the body is already doing.

Reset10 is an introduction to that work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time will I need each day?

The formal guidance is intentionally short. Much of the experience happens while you're doing activities that are already part of your day.

What if I can't feel very much in my body?

That's okay. You don't need advanced body awareness. Learning to recognize smaller signals is part of the process.

What if I notice tension and it doesn't soften?

That's normal. Noticing isn't a command to relax. You'll learn to distinguish observation from trying to force a physical change.

Do I have to stop exercising?

No. Movement and exercise can actually become useful places to observe how your body uses effort.

Is this physical therapy?

No. Reset10 is an educational experience and does not diagnose or treat medical conditions or replace individualized healthcare.

What if I have chronic pain?

You may still find the awareness and effort concepts useful. New, severe, worsening, or unexplained symptoms should be appropriately evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

What happens after Reset10?

You can continue using what you've learned on your own. If you'd like more structure and guidance, EaseOut6 is the next step and expands this work over six weeks.

You don't have to fight every place your body tightens.

Sometimes the first step is understanding the pattern differently.
