Private Session With James

Sometimes you need another set of eyes.

A private 45-minute discussion and observation session to help uncover patterns of effort you may not be able to see from inside your own body.

You've already started looking beyond the tightness itself.

Now we can look together at what may be happening before the tightness gets your attention.

You can only see so much from inside a pattern you've repeated thousands of times.

Your shoulders may lift every time you concentrate.

You may brace your abdomen before certain movements.

Your breathing may change whenever you anticipate effort.

Your jaw, neck, back or hips may join tasks that don't appear to require nearly that much work.

But when you've been doing something for years, it may no longer feel unusual.

The pattern may feel so normal that you don't know there's anything to notice.

That's where having another set of experienced eyes can become valuable.

This isn't just a conversation about where you're tight.

We're going to investigate what your body actually does.

I'll watch the pattern.

You may show me ordinary movements, positions or activities related to what you've been experiencing.

We'll look at effort.

I'll watch for places where your body may be using more effort, bracing or participation than the task appears to require.

We'll change something.

We may alter effort, timing, breathing, position, movement or attention and observe what happens.

We'll see what matters.

Not everything we notice is important. Part of my job is helping separate useful clues from things you don't need to keep trying to fix.

The value isn't simply that I can see you move.

It's knowing what to look at.

After decades of working with people around pain, movement, tension and physical function, I've watched thousands of bodies solve the same task in very different ways.

I'm not primarily looking for whether you have “good posture” or whether a movement looks perfect.

I'm interested in relationships.

What happens before the effort?

What changes during it?

What happens when we change one variable?

And does that actually affect what you're experiencing?

Sometimes a small pattern you've never paid attention to becomes very interesting.

Sometimes something you've spent years trying to correct turns out not to be where I'd focus at all.

Both can be valuable discoveries.

Here's how it works.

1

Choose your session time.

Select an available 45-minute appointment below.

2

Complete your questionnaire.

After booking and payment, you'll receive the questionnaire so I can understand your situation before we meet.

3

We investigate together.

During your private session we'll observe, experiment and see what your body actually shows us.

4

You receive your report.

I'll send you a written summary of what I noticed, what I believe is worth exploring and what you can begin doing at home.

You won't automatically be told you need more sessions.

Part of what you're paying me for is my opinion about what actually makes sense next.

You may be able to do this yourself.

If the pattern looks relatively straightforward and I believe you can work with it independently, I'll tell you.

Reset10 or another self-guided approach may be all I'd recommend.

You may benefit from more guidance.

If the pattern is difficult to recognize, keeps changing, or requires more progressive experimentation, I may recommend additional personalized work.

I'll explain why rather than simply telling you to buy another program.

Or this may not be where I'd focus.

I'm not going into your session determined to prove that Hidden Effort explains what you're experiencing.

If what I see doesn't appear particularly relevant—or I believe you need an appropriate healthcare evaluation instead—I'll tell you.

Good fit if...

You've dealt with recurring tension, tightness or discomfort for a while.

You've already tried stretching, strengthening, mobility, massage, posture work or other approaches.

Things may help, but the same pattern keeps returning.

You're having trouble figuring out what matters.

You want an experienced person to observe your actual pattern instead of handing you another generic routine.

Not the right fit if...

You're looking for a medical diagnosis.

You're seeking a physical therapy evaluation or treatment.

You need evaluation of a new injury or concerning symptoms.

You're looking for someone to promise the cause of your pain.

You're looking for a passive treatment where someone fixes your body for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this physical therapy?

No. This is an educational and coaching-based discussion and observation session focused on effort, movement and self-awareness.

It is not a physical therapy evaluation, medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment.

Will you diagnose what's causing my pain?

No. Pain and persistent symptoms can have many contributors.

We'll investigate whether patterns of effort appear relevant to what you're experiencing and observe what happens when those patterns change.

What happens after I book?

You'll receive a questionnaire that gives me more information about your situation, what you've already tried and what you most want to understand.

I'll review it before our session.

How long is the session?

Your private session with James is 45 minutes.

What happens during the session?

We'll talk about what you've been experiencing, and I may ask you to demonstrate simple movements, positions or ordinary activities.

We'll then experiment with effort, movement, breathing, position or attention and observe what changes.

What will I receive afterward?

You'll receive a personalized written report summarizing the patterns I noticed, what changed during the session, what I think is worth exploring and practical experiments you can continue at home.

Will I have to purchase another program?

No.

The session stands on its own. I'll give you my recommendation for what I believe makes sense next, but you decide what you want to do with it.

What if you don't find Hidden Effort?

That's useful information too.

I'm not trying to make everyone's symptoms fit this framework. If what you show me doesn't appear relevant to this approach, I'll tell you.

What if I would rather work on this by myself?

Reset10 may be the better starting point.

The private session is primarily for people who want individual observation, feedback and help deciding what is worth focusing on.

Can this replace seeing my doctor or physical therapist?

No. This service is educational and exploratory and is not a substitute for medical care or rehabilitation when those services are appropriate.

You already know where you're tight.

Let's find out what you may not be seeing.
