SAFE7 Checklist— Before You Push, Check This

(This is not a test.
There is no score.
You’re just noticing.)

Before or during any movement, exercise, or activity — pause and ask:

1. Can I breathe without holding my breath?
If breath stops, the body is bracing.

2. Can I slow this down without tension rising?
If slowing increases strain, the system is overloaded.

3. Do I feel supported — or am I muscling through?
Support tells the body it’s not alone.

4. Could I stop right now instead of pushing to finish?
Choice is one of the strongest safety signals.

5. Is effort increasing… or softening?
More effort isn’t always progress.

6. After I pause, does my body feel more organized or more scattered?
Integration feels clearer, not heavier.

7. Would doing less feel safer right now?
Less is not regression when the system is guarded.

How to use SAFE7

  • You don’t need all 7 to be “yes.”
  • One “no” isn’t failure — it’s information.
  • The checklist isn’t telling you what to do. It’s showing you whether your body can receive input today.

Remember

The exercise or activity isn't wrong. The timing might be.

If SAFE7 says “not today”...

That doesn’t mean stop forever.

It usually means the body needs one or more of the following first:

  • less intensity
  • more support
  • slower pacing
  • simpler movement
  • or a pause to settle

Safety comes before strength.

You’re not behind.

Your body isn’t resisting you.

It’s communicating.

Learning to listen — without forcing — is often the beginning of real change.
